Unfortunate Scholars out

Chasetown were eliminated from the Doodson Northern Premier League Cup by Staffordshire neighbours Kidsgrove Athletic.

After a quiet opening, the Scholars took the lead midway through the first half.

George Washbourne teed up Paul Sullivan, whose left-footed strike was tipped on to the post by Ben Chapman and Nick Turton tapped the rebound into an empty net.

Five minutes before half-time, Grove levelled after a cross from the left was clinically headed home by Andy Kinsey.

Chasetown could still have gone in at the interval ahead when, on the stroke of half-time, Sullivan twisted and turned in the area but struck the base of the post for the second time.

Early in the second period, Turton thought he had restored Chasetown's lead, but the assistant's flag ruled out the effort for offside.

Kidsgrove went straight up the other end and John Bateman flung himself across to deny an almost certain goal from Joe Woolley.

However, in the 75th minute, Athletic got their winner. Chasetown conceded possession in the defensive third and from the resultant corner, Paul Taylor's header deflected past Bateman.

The Scholars, 15th in Evo-Stik Division One South, will look to get back to winning ways when they host 18th-placed Belper on Saturday.
