Joy as entrance to Pipers Row reopening after tram works

A right-hand turn onto Pipers Row in Wolverhampton will open in the spring, bosses have announced.

The junction leading motorists onto Pipers Row remains closed

Tram line extension work in Pipers Row, which has caused delays for drivers in and out of the city, was re-opened in November 10 last year.

But a section of the route – a right-hand turn from the Bilston Street island – has not yet re-opened, with traffic signals yet to be installed.

A date for the work, due to be completed by the Midland Metro Alliance (MMA), is not yet known, however.

A spokeswoman said: "The Midland Metro Alliance is currently in the process of finalising the equipment requirements for the traffic signals on Pipers Row.

"The right-hand turn is expected to reopen this spring, once the traffic signals are installed.”

Pipers Row has been opened and closed as work, which started in 2017, was carried out – with drivers entering the city still forced to take a detour around St Georges Parade.

Councillor Wendy Thompson, leader of the Conservatives in the city, called for them to "get on with it".

Councillor Thompson said: "It's been going on since Adam [Adam & Eve] was a lad, as they say.

"It's ludicrous and honestly people are fed up to the teeth and of course it's not good enough.

"It should have been done a long time ago and businesses have suffered and that's the real problem.

"I want to tell them to 'get on with it'. I don't know what the reasons are, but whatever they are, in China they are building hospitals in a day – so what's the big problem?

"It's very frustrating, extremely frustrating in fact, and people battle these traffic issues each day.

"It's not good enough and people will put up with it for a degree of time – because they understand work needs to be done – but they don't expect anything like this."
