Football fans heading to Wolverhampton for tonight's FA Cup clash are being warned that a major route into the city is being affected by essential gas works.

Engineers from gas network Cadent are dealing with several leaks on a gas main under the A454 Horseley Fields.

Interactive map of the route:

Cadent engineers were called to the site last week after reports of smelling gas in the area.

The road comes off the busy Willenhall Road before leading on to the Bilston Island ring road, a major route to the city.

The pipe runs directly under the road surface meaning temporary traffic lights are in place to manage the safe flow of vehicles around the work area.

Motorists are being advised to budget extra time for journeys or use alternative routes.

A spokesman for Cadent said: “We found a number of leaks on this main. These are small and are being regularly monitored, so people should not be alarmed.

“This requires specialist engineering work to fix the leaks and this will take us a few days at least.

"We are sorry for the disruption, but hope people understand it’s essential work to keep everyone safe and warm.”

Wolves take on Liverpool in tonight's FA Cup third round game at Molineux, kicking off at 7.45pm.

During tonight's match Wolves will pay tribute to club legend Bill Slater who died last month aged 91.
