West Bromwich West MP Adrian Bailey has complained about the image, which appeared on the Twitter page of Sandwell councillor Caroline White on Sunday night.

Mr Bailey said he was “deeply offended” by the tweet, which was deleted on Tuesday morning.

“I shall be consulting my solicitors over the issue,” he said.

Ms White, an independent councillor for Cradley Heath and Old Hill, was thrown out of the Labour Party in May over claims she had campaigned for an opposing candidate in the local elections.

She claimed to have held a ladder so her friend – independent candidate Dave Hosell – would not fall as he placed campaign posters on lampposts.

Ms White said she intended no ill feeling towards Mr Bailey with the tweet, saying she had intended to make a general point about the placement of newspaper headlines.

"I am not having a go at Adrian Bailey at all, but people are jumping on it and trying to turn it around."
