The Brexiteer and Conservative MP for Lichfield was trapped between two floors in a lift he described as 'the smallest in history' for more than an hour.

Engineers were eventually called and the MP was hauled to safety.

During his ordeal Mr Fabricant tweeted: "Not that I am getting paranoid stuck in this bloody lift, but I wonder if this is a Whip’s exercise for the real thing on December 11 when the lifts will be made to jam all the MPs (90+?) in lifts who plan to vote against Chequers."

He added: "My thanks to the man who forced open the outer lift doors when he eventually found the lift and, after I forced the inner doors, heaved me out."

Mr Fabricant has vowed to vote against Theresa May's Brexit deal when it goes before the Commons next month, describing it as a 'betrayal' of the British public that could see the Tories out of power for a decade.
