Elizabeth Eva Weaver – known locally as Betty – died on Wednesday aged 87.

She lived for most of her life in Ashmore Park, Wednesfield, where she set up and ran a ‘pop up’ jumble sale for residents at St Alban’s C of E Church in Griffiths Drive for many years.

The regular event doubled up as a meeting place for local people, who could make new friends and also get a hot breakfast.

Mrs Weaver was born on November 3, 1935 and had three children – Timothy Ian and Deb, and also three grandchildren – Jay, Thomas and Jack.

Grandson Jack, who runs security at Walsall FC’s Bescot Stadium, said: “She was the most wonderful lady and never let anything get in the way of a chance to help other people. She had a lot of friends on the estate and helped set up the ‘pop up’ jumble sale for people on Ashmore Park, which became better known as more of a ‘pop in’, as it was where a lot of the locals went to meet up and have a chat.

“She touched a lot of people during her life and was someone who was always there who anyone could talk to about anything. She was born in Steelhouse Lane near the former Wolverhampton Royal Hospital and before retiring worked at Beatties, Woolworth and also for Meals on Wheels.”

Councillor Phil Bateman said: “Betty was a lovely person – a real character like so many who of those who live here on Ashmore Park. She was always willing to help and was very well-known and much-loved across the estate as well as further afield in the West Midlands. She was one of those people of that generation that just got on with life without much appearing  to faze her. Rest in peace Betty.”

Betty’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, January 17, at St Alban’s Church, Griffiths Drive, Ashmore Park, Wednesfield.
