Wolverhampton has been named among the UK's car crime hotspots

The city has come fourth in a list of where motorists are most likely to have their vehicle stolen or broken into.

A total of 3,440 car crimes took place over the past 12 months in Wolverhampton. Of those, 774 involved a car theft.

A study by second hand car seller ChoosemyCar compared the level of crime with the number of registered vehicles in each town and city.

It found crime in Wolverhampton was among the worst, with 27 thefts per 1,000 vehicles. Only Manchester, Nottingham and Bradford had a higher crime rate.

Birmingham had the most overall car crimes in the whole of the UK, with 14,758 combined offences. But when compared in relation to the number of vehicles on the road in the city, its crime rate was relatively much lower than Wolverhampton.

In response to the figures, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said: “I’ve been campaigning on vehicle crime for some time and these figures should send a message to the government about the impact their lack of action is taking, causing misery to car owners.

"The growing demand for car parts, poor security of vehicles and the thefts that result are causing serious danger to the public and police officers.”

Data taken from UK police forces looked at thefts of a vehicle, thefts from a vehicle and vehicle tampering.
