Mike Hall, Sundeep Singh and Simon Smith from the force’s cannabis team were flagged down by a driver in Hickman Avenue, Wolverhampton on July 3.

The passenger of the car was in labour, about to give birth and Mike rushed to her aid and helped to deliver a baby girl.

Sundeep and Simon managed to flag down a passing ambulance and paramedics tended to the mother and newborn baby before taking them to hospital.

Mike, the cannabis disposal team manager, said: “It was far from your typical call for help but it was definitely one of the most rewarding.

"I have been with the force for more than 30 years and never had to deliver a baby before.

"We receive medical training but nothing can ever prepare you for such a situation. That was a day we won’t forget in a hurry. I’m immensely proud that we were able to safely bring a new baby into the world and the fact our actions have been recognised with an award is simply the cherry on top."

The trio received their awards at a ceremony at Tally Ho! on November 7.
