Cars wrecked as dramatic Walsall police chase ends in crash
Three police cars were rammed and seven other vehicles were damaged during a dramatic chase in Walsall today.
Several of the cars were left with major damage after the Volkswagen Golf police were chasing crashed on Pleck Road this morning.
A man who was inside the Golf ran away but was eventually stopped by officers and arrested after jumping over a wall, West Midlands Police said.
The incident started when police spotted the white Golf, which was believed to have been stolen, travelling down the A454 Wolverhampton Road in Walsall at 9.45am.
When officers tried to pull the Golf over, the driver rammed three police cars on the dual carriageway to get away.
The hatchback then drove onto nearby Pleck Road where the chase continued until the Golf collided with three moving cars near the junction with Vicarage Terrace.
The Golf was left with major damage to its front end, while a Fiat 500 ended up stuck on the pavement between a tree and a fence with a damaged bumper and rear wheel.
Around four other parked vehicles, including a blue Kia and a white truck, were damaged after being shunted into each other.
Meanwhile a man fled from the Golf and jumped over a wall.
However, with the police helicopter monitoring the incident from the air, he was soon detained and arrested on suspicion of stealing the car.
It is not known if anybody else was inside the car during the chase.
The A4148 Pleck Road was closed in the aftermath of the crash as debris was cleared from the road and the wrecked Golf was recovered.
Photos taken at the scene showed the scale of the damage to the vehicles involved, including smashed windows, crumpled doors and buckled wheels.
Two people were assessed by paramedics but nobody was seriously injured.
A West Midlands Police spokesman said:
"The 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and theft of motor vehicle, he remains in police custody.
"Two people were checked over at the scene as a precaution and fortunately there were no reported serious injuries."
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith added: "We assessed two patients - a woman and a man.
"They were both able to be discharged at the scene with minor injuries.
"They were the only two patients assessed."
