The 30-year-old man's black Renault Clio was involved in a crash with a grey Peugeot 2008 being driven by an 80-year-old woman from Stafford yesterday.

Firefighters had to cut the roof off the Peugeot to free the woman after the crash happened on the B5066 Sandon Road, near its junction with Hopton Lane, at about 3.25pm.

She was treated in hospital for minor injuries and has since been released.

The driver of the Clio, from West Bromwich, was airlifted to hospital and remains there in a critical condition, a Staffordshire Police spokesman confirmed today.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses of the crash or anyone who has seen either vehicle beforehand.

It is believed the Renault was travelling from the Sandon direction and the Peugeot had come from the Stafford direction.

Any witnesses are asked to call 101 or anyone with dashcam footage should email ciu@staffordshire.pnn.police.uk quoting incident number 524 of December 20.
