Olive was joined by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at Stafford Constitutional Club.

And to make the occasion even more memorable, her birthday included a surprise visit from the ice cream man at Cannock Dairies, who delivered 99s for everyone.

Olive said: “I’m aiming for the 100 and to have my family around me means more to me than anything in this wide world."

Born in Great Yarmouth, on February 3, 1921, Olive was the youngest of three children.

During the war, aged 18, she was sent to work for Short Brothers in Chatham, assisting in the manufacture of the Sunderland Flying Boat and later the Sterling Bomber.

It was in Chatham that she met her late husband, George, a serving sailor at the time.

Olive had been asked to play in a football match but instead decided to watch – and it was on the touchline they first caught sight of each other, while George was in his dashing uniform.

Post war they moved to Stafford, George's home town where he worked on the railway, whilst Olive delivered milk in Doxey. They went on to have five children together.

Olive's granddaughter Cheryl Duke, 35, said: "My nan has just turned 99 and that's not something that happens every day.

"She’s a remarkable lady and an inspiration to us all."
