The busy route was closed for several hours as a police investigation was launched following the crash at around 8.30am on Tuesday.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith said: “On arrival, crews discovered the lorry driver, a man, who was still inside his vehicle following the collision.

“Ambulance staff quickly assessed he had suffered multiple serious injuries in the collision and worked alongside colleagues from the fire service to secure access to the patient.

“Unfortunately, despite everyone’s best efforts, it became apparent nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”

The crash is believed to have involved a lorry from security fencing manufacturer CLD Fencing Systems based in Cheshire.

A company spokesman said: "It is with great sadness that we report the loss of a loyal and long-standing driver of our CLD family this morning in a road accident.

"Our thoughts go out to their family and we will be there to offer support throughout this tough time and ongoing for as long as they need us."

The lorry struck a tree off the southbound side of the road, just past the Tipton Road junction close to the well-known former rail bridge.

A fire service spokesman said crews had to cut their way into the cab to allow paramedics access to the driver.

Police advised motorists of delays in the area while the road was closed in both directions from Tipton Road, close to the Black Country Living Museum, to the Burnt Tree junction near Tesco Extra.

A green sheet was pulled over the front of the cab while collision investigators examined the road.

Two ambulances and two paramedic officers were at the crash, while West Midlands Fire Service sent three fire engines and 15 firefighters, including its technical rescue team.

Sergeant Lee Froggatt, from the West Midlands Police traffic unit, said: "I’d appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision and hasn’t already spoken to us, or has CCTV or dash-cam footage to get in touch."
