Police closed the A4123 Wolverhampton Road, near to Birchley Island, after the crash last night.

Officers said the collision involved a motorcyclist and pedestrian, a 70-year-old woman. She was found with serious injuries under a bridge.

It happened at around 8.30pm on Wednesday. Police believe the woman was crossing the road with two family members when she was struck by the motorbike.

Emergency services were called but the woman died at the scene, just after 9pm.

The woman's family are now being supported by specialist officers.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The pedestrian, a woman, was in a critical condition when ambulance staff arrived.

"The team of medics worked quickly to administer advanced life support to her but sadly, despite their best efforts, nothing could be done to save the woman and she was confirmed dead on scene a short time later."

The motorcyclist, a man, sustained minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment, said West Midlands Ambulance Service.

Specialist paramedics and a doctor joined crews at the scene.

The road was closed for a number of hours overnight as emergency services crews worked and drivers were advised to avoid the area.

West Midlands Police has now launched an investigation into the crash and is appealing for anyone who was in the area with dashcam footage to come forward.

A small area remains cordoned off by police tape this morning, blocking off a walkway from Wolverhampton Road to the nearby Aldi car park.

Inspector Stephen Radford, from West Midlands Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “I am appealing for any witnesses of this collision to come forward, particularly if anyone has any dashcam footage.

“We have spoken with two motorcyclists at the scene and they are both helping police with enquiries.”
