Nearly £300,000 could be spent in implementing the safety measures outside schools including Fairhaven Primary School and the Wordsley School.

The 20mph zones will be installed outside nine schools, while a raft of other safety measures would also be brought in.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, Dudley Council's cabinet member for environmental, highways and street services, said the authority will look to introduce the scheme "as quickly as possible".

The schools include Fairhaven Primary School, Belle View Primary School and the Wordsley School, all in Stourbridge; the Link Academy, Bishop Milner Catholic High School, St Joseph's Catholic Primary School and Netherton Park Nursery School, all in Dudley; the Bromley Pensnett Primary School, in Brierley Hill; and Tenterfields Primary School, in Halesowen.

Work will also be carried out to improve road safety and sustainable travel throughout the borough.

Councillor Shakespeare said: "As part of our programme to improve safety on our streets around schools, the 20mph zones will only be in place during drop off and pick up times.

"Flashing signs will alert motorists that children are going into or leaving school.

“They are among a number of measures being introduced outside school gates.

“All schools across the borough have been assessed and work prioritised. Local residents will be consulted on our proposals and the council will work to introduce the schemes as quickly as possible.”

The proposals will be out for consultation before a final decision is made in the coming months.
