Police closed the A38 Bristol Road, in Birmingham, for several hours following the crash.

The woman reportedly got off a double decker bus in Edgbaston at around 3.30pm on Saturday.

It is believed she was struck by car just moments later on the busy route.

The 65-year-old woman, who lived locally, was treated for serious internal injuries.

But she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her family are being supported by specialist officers, say West Midlands Police.

The crash happened on the A38 between the junctions for Edgbaston Park Road and Pebble Mill Road.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and remained in police custody on Sunday.

Sergeant Alan Hands, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “I am keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened and has not yet spoken to police.

“We are in the early stages of our investigation and we are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who saw a blue Volkswagen Golf car which was involved in the collision.

“Our thoughts remain with the family of the woman who has sadly lost her life, who ask that they are left to grieve.”

Bristol Road was open to traffic on Sunday.
