Council chiefs in the region stressed a need for “continued vigilance” against the pandemic to curb its spread.

It comes as cases remain “prevalent” in the West Midlands with leaders calling on residents to do their bit and save lives.

Councillor Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “We all know how tough the last few months have been and everyone has sacrificed so much.

"But people right across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands still have a huge part to play if we’re going to avoid a further lockdown and we can’t afford to drop our guard now.

“We all want to keep our loved ones, our friends, neighbours and colleagues safe, so we must all continue to play our part.

“This really is about saving lives and that’s why it’s so important to keep social distancing, to wash hands frequently, wear face coverings in enclosed spaces and at the first sign of Covid-19 get a test.

"If we all follow these simple routines we stand a chance of controlling the virus.”

Leaders of Birmingham, Coventry, Sandwell, Solihull, Dudley, Walsall and Wolverhampton councils all met to discuss the regional picture.

And they urged businesses to contact Public Health England as soon as a case is identified. It comes after Sandwell and Wolverhampton saw a spike in cases – which has since reduced, chiefs have confirmed.
