Toby Lewis, chief executive of the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, said local businesses had stepped in to help address long running issues with getting hold of PPE for health workers.

Addressing the issue at the region's coronavirus briefing, he said: "I'm pleased to say that for a lot of services within the NHS across the West Midlands, things are getting better.

"I think that there is good evidence that organisations working with the local business community are finding solutions that are effective.

"It is fantastic that staff are speaking out when that is not the case, so that when things go wrong they can be corrected."

More than 500 businesses have offered to assist with PPE supplies in the West Midlands, with around 100 now working with local authorities as potential suppliers.
