Figures released by The Complete University Guide has ranked Wolverhampton 124th out of 131 high education institutions.

It makes the Black Country university the second worst in the West Midlands, only one rank ahead of Newman University in Birmingham.

Wolverhampton scored low on entry standards, meaning a large number of undergraduate students joined the university with a low UCAS tariff score.

They also scored poorly in research quality, and picked up average results in student satisfaction and graduate prospects, before achieving a low overall score.

Elsewhere in the West Midlands and Staffordshire, the University of Birmingham was the second best in the region, climbing two ranks from last year and coming 13th overall.

Staffordshire University achieved rank 58, which was 15 places higher than last year and Birmingham City University came 91st, which was six places higher than last year.

The best university in the West Midlands was Warwick University, that came 12th, three ranks lower than last year.

In Shropshire, Harper Adams University was one of the highest climbers as it jumped 21 places from 48th to 27th.

The university had already leaped from 84th to 60th and then to 48th in recent years.

It's new position has made it the third highest university in the West Midlands category.

Simon Emmett, CEO of IDP Connect, the group behind TheCompleteUniversityGuide.co.uk, said: “These independent and unbiased league tables are used by almost a million applicants and their advisers monthly and are, as importantly, also well respected by the universities themselves for their accuracy and stability.

“Fully online and free to access, the university rankings provide users with independent and trustworthy league and subject tables.

"Each of the Guide’s tables can be sorted by their individual measures, year, region and mission group, including unaffiliated universities.”

The main University League Table is based on ten factors, entry standards, student satisfaction, research quality, research intensity, graduate prospects, student-staff ratio, spending on academic services, spending on student facilities, good honours degrees, and completion.
