The Pied Piper in Cannock has been shut since 2014

Firearm officers arrived at The Pied Piper in Pye Green Road on Monday night at 8.20pm.

But after a search of the area the group or the weapon was not found.

Staffordshire Police spokesman Faye Casey said: "We received a call just before 8.20pm reporting suspicious persons near the Pied Piper pub.

"The information received said they were in possession of what was believed to be an air rifle."

The pub shut down three years ago.

A proposal was put forward to build a supermarket on the site - but the plan was withdrawn following community pressure.

Stan Collymore, who is from Cannock, also spoke in support of saving the pub.
