Man stabbed at Smethwick Galton Bridge station

One man was stabbed and a woman injured when violence flared at Smethwick Galton Bridge train station.

Emergency services were called to the station at around 9pm yesterday.

The stabbed man, in his 20s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries that were not believed to be life threatening.

The woman was taken to hospital with head injuries which were believed to be minor.

The station was shut, and people were being turned away as officers worked at the scene.

Det Ch Insp James Fitzpatrick said: "This was a serious assault and we are working hard to trace the person responsible.

"Thankfully, assaults as this are rare and we carrying out extensive CCTV enquiries and speaking to witnesses to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

"If you saw what happened, please do get in touch as you may have essential information that may help us investigate. Whilst this investigation is in its early stages, at this time I believe the victims are known to the attacker."
