Collapsed building in Birmingham leaves "at least one seriously injured"

A building has collapsed in the heart of Birmingham, leaving at least one person "seriously injured".

Police, fire and ambulance crews have poured into the Jewellery Quarter after the building came down in Vittoria Street.

At least one person has been left seriously injured, with another taken to hospital with minor injuries.

It is believed a wall collapsed at the scene just before 6pm this evening.

West Midlands Police is now warning the public to avoid the area as the road remains closed.

It said: "Police were called to reports that a building on Vittoria Street in Hockley, Birmingham, had collapsed just before 6pm this evening.

"It’s understood that at least one person has been seriously injured.

"Officers are currently at the scene with fire and ambulance colleagues. The health and safety executive have been informed.

"Vittoria Street is closed to allow for emergency services to investigate the cause of the collapse. Members of the public are asked to avoid the area."

West Midlands Ambulance Service's hazardous area response team said: "Currently in attendance at a wall collapse in Vittoria Street, Birmingham.

"One patient discharged on scene, one taken to hospital with minor injuries and one patient has been seriously injured. We are working with police and fire colleagues at scene."
