Brighton & Hove Albion said the fan had attended the home game at the Amex Stadium with his son.

The club's medical staff helped the supporter when he was taken unwell.

He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital where he died.

Brighton chief executive, Paul Barber, said: “This is very sad news and the thoughts and prayers of all of us at the club are with the gentleman’s family and friends at this time.”

It came on a sad day for football yesterday after former England and Wolves manager Glenn Hoddle was taken seriously ill and a helicopter crash outside Leicester City's King Power Stadium.
