Birmingham man Amirul Islam was told he was 'arrogant' by Judge Michael Chambers QC as he sent him to prison for causing the death of Sarah Child.

The 26-year-old from Birmingham died after a crash near the Co-Operative supermarket in Walsall Road at 6pm on July 28. Her pregnant sister Claire, 24, was rushed to hospital with a serious leg injury. Her unborn child was uninjured in the crash.

Birmingham Crown Court heard that Islam had sounded his horn as he drove towards the sisters, and he had expected them to move out of the way.

The 36-year-old of Sandhill Farm, Lozells, was travelling at an average 64mph at the time of the crash.

He had previously pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. Mr Rashad Mohammed, defending, said Islam thought he could get past them before they walked in his path. He added: "He made a tragic mistake."

Judge Chambers said Islam, who had been at the wheel of an Audi A4, was driving aggressively before the crash, getting very close to other cars and forcing them out of his way.

The judge said Islam would have had plenty of time to see the pair crossing the road.

He said Islam had been guilty of a 'deliberate and arrogant piece of driving'. Islam was also banned from driving for five years.

Following the crash neighbours called for changes to be made to the junction. They said it was dangerous because the traffic lights do not leave enough time for people to cross the road.
