The council's cabinet has agreed to set aside a budget of £68,000 for the improvement project at the site off South Road.

A report by chief executive John Polychronakis says: "A number of improvements are that the facility complies with legislative and technical requirement and meets customer expectations.

"Improvement works are proposed to the cremators and the catafalque to bring them up to industry standards as well as other improvements to the chapel, which will increase standards of comfort and appearance for visitors."

Kinver Funeral Directors, in High Street, is among many firms in the area which use the site.

Director John Cumiskey said: "The crematorium is always very popular, families do like it, but, like everywhere, it could do with a bit more sparkle and work to bring it up to modern standards.

"I hope the planned work gets the go ahead."

Stourbridge Crematorium was opened in 1960 is situated within the grounds of Stourbridge Cemeter.

The original chapel building dates back more than a hundred years.

In 2010 the crematorium was fitted with a new furnace and a disabled access ramp was installed.

Security devices costing £25,000 were also fitted at the site after it was hit by a spate of vandalism and thefts.

Last October, the council completed a £1million scheme to replace outdated facilities at Gornal Wood Cemetery and Crematorium, in Chase Road.
