A popular Christmas comedy and music show which features a host of top performers and attracts thousands of fans has been cancelled.

Organisers of the Rock With Laughter show blamed the economic climate and inability to attract the right calibre of artist. The show has been running for the past seven years and has always featured a string of high profile acts.

Among the stars to have performed before include Jasper Carrott, Roy Wood, Alan Carr, Jack Dee, Jo Brand and Graham Norton.

But this year the promoter Highfield Productions found they could not attract the celebrities they wanted for the LG Arena shows which had been due to take place this Friday and Saturday. In a statement it said: "2012 seems to be a very difficult year for everyone and sadly the producers of Rock With Laughter have taken the difficult decision to cancel Rock With Laughter 2012.

"Nobody wants to hear about the tricky economic climate, but more importantly, we have been unable to secure the calibre of artist that our audience has come to expect and to offer anything less than the best simply isn't an option, nor is it value for money for our very loyal fans.

"Consequently, all our efforts will now be centred upon securing a stonking line-up for 2013."

It went on to say: "Of course, anyone who has purchased tickets for this year will be offered a full refund and we hope that you will put that money into a secure piggy-bank ready to buy your tickets for Rock With Laughter 2013."

The show, which is usually a sell-out, had become a Christmas tradition for many Midlanders. Last year top comedians Sarah Millican and Graham Norton were rudely interrupted at the Rock With Laughter show, to each be given a top comedy award.
