A former Spar shop and office block in Wolverhampton is being demolished to make way for the city's new £22.5million bus station.

Bulldozers have moved in to demolish Pipers Row House to make way for a new waiting area to be created for a 19-stand bus station, which will open next summer.

A five-strong demolition team, using a 65-ton "muncher" and 40-ton claw, are expected to take until the weekend to demolish the building.

It will open up the site to expose the grand Queens Building behind.

Leftover masonry and glass will be recycled and parts of it will serve as the foundations for the new bus station.

Senior site manager John Buckley said: "It is going to take a few days because it is not something we can just rush into."

Replacing Piper's Row House will be a new two-storey building with 16,000 sq ft of floor space.
