Reg and Evelyn Joyce Leedham, aged 77 and 74, were both slashed in the incident at their ninth floor flat at 15 storey St Joseph's Court in Merry Hill on December 4.

Mrs Leedham suffered cuts to her throat, face and hand as well as a puncture wound to her chest. Her husband was also badly injured.

The couple, now released from hospital and continuing their recovery at a secret address, still found time to remember the Boxing Day 80th birthday of neighbour Don Jervis.

Mr Jervis, who lives on the 6th floor of St Joseph's Court, received a card from Mrs Leedham and her husband yesterday.

It was headed 'thank you' and carried the hand written note: "Couldn't let your 80th pass without sending you our good wishes. This is the only card I had.

"Have a brace on my hand, hence the writing. Its going to be a long job. Take care of yourself." It was signed Reg and Joyce.

Mr Jervis said: "It was a lovely gesture that they bothered to send a card but it is typical of the couple that despite the terrible ordeal they have suffered suffered they still have time to think of others.

"I am sure that everybody who knows them will be delighted to hear that they are slowly recovering and will wish them well at especially this time of the year.

"They are a lovely couple who are very popular."

Mr and Mrs Leedham are not expected to return to the scene of the attack. Wolverhampton Homes have vowed to rehouse them elsewhere.

David Brown, 38, who also lived in St Joseph's Court has appeared in court accused of trying to kill them.

He has been remanded in custody by magistrates until March 2.
