Frank: Goal scorer is priority

Former Wolves stalwart Frank Munro has urged his former club to use their takeover to sign a goalscorer to achieve automatic promotion next season.

Ex-Scotland international Munro also singled out praise for keeper Matt Murray and the improvement in the form of Seyi Olofinjana as chief reasons behind the club's improved fortunes.

Compton-based Munro, who still keeps a close eye on gold and black fortunes, praised manager Mick McCarthy and his young squad for a "fantastic" season of over-achievement and was confident they would start next year on a high.

He has watched Wolves all season and was impressed by how well the young squad performed, particularly new signings Michael Kightly and Andy Keogh.

But with the top scorer being 10-goal Olofinjana from midfield, the 59-year-old former defender said it was essential McCarthy signed a goalscorer this summer to help them secure their dream of top-flight football.

Wolves have been linked with Scunthorpe hitman Billy Sharp – Keogh's recent team-mate at the Iron – and with Steve Morgan's £30m cash injection, they might be able to meet the £2m asking price.

"I've been to a lot of games this year and I've been very impressed with them," said Munro, who was appearing at Cannock's Sports Bar with fellow Scots and former Wolves midfielder Jim McCalliog and ex-Molineux boss Tommy Docherty.

Mick has signed two good players in Kightly and Keogh, but they need an out and out goalscorer who's going to get 20 goals a season as well.

Mick has done a fantastic job, he's giving youth more of a chance and Matt Murray has been excellent, but the biggest improvement in the team has been Olofinjana. "He wasn't going anywhere under Hoddle but he has had a really good season."

Munro, who played almost 400 games for Wolves believes Wolves need to sign two or three good players this summer to try to ensure automatic promotion next season. But he admits he wasn't expecting his old side to perform so well.

"They're not far off that and McCarthy deserves all the credit in the world," he said.

"I don't think it's going to be such a big heartbreak for them because they've got to remember they've done so well to get where they did. "
