The former pupil of Walsall's Alumwell Comprehensive School beat 12 rivals to win Sky One's Project Catwalk 2, £20,000, which will help him set up a shop, and a chance to create his own line for Designers at Debenhams.

As a 12-year-old designed a wooden carving for York Minster for a competition organised by the children's TV show Blue Peter.

He was among the first wave of fashion students at Walsall Art College, where he initially enrolled on an art course.

His passion for fashion blossomed when lecturer Linda Cole launched the first fashion design course. "I would love to go back and meet the students and catch with some of my friends who are now lecturing at Walsall College," he said.

Memories

"I have many fond memories of Walsall although I been in London for about 13 years now.

"I quite liked Alumwell School, it was a good school. I really wanted to get into the art world and the teachers were very supportive.

"I wouldn't mind going back to to meet the pupils." Since beating fellow Project Catwalk finalists Monika Rene, aged 28, and Luke Youngblood, 19, Wayne said he has had offers of TV work.

He said: "At the moment my priority is working on my Debenhams collection and working with my backer. This is what is going to make people take me seriously.

"I've always got ideas for designs and I'm rearing to go," he added.

He regularly visits his mother, Barbara Brittle, of Wednesbury, and father Graham Aveline, of Walsall. He has a sister Melissa, 35, and step-brothers Christopher, Frank and Gavin Rock. He specialises in haute couture and women's evening wear.
