Manchester United have agreed an 80million euro (£73.7m) fee with Inter Milan for Romelu Lukaku, PA understands.

It is understood Inter, managed by ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, have increased their bid after having a 60 million euros (£54m) offer rejected last month.

On Wednesday evening Lukaku’s agent Federico Pastorello posted a picture on Instagram of himself and the striker apparently headed to Italy, accompanied by the words: “Ready to take off …. direction Milano.”

After a swap deal with Juventus fell through due to Paulo Dybala’s reluctance to go the other way, Lukaku started this week training with former club Anderlecht.

Social media footage appeared to show the player being welcomed to Milan by supporters in the early hours of Thursday morning.

It is reported he has been fined by United after missing training with them on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old Belgium international is poised to leave the club just two years on from joining in a big-money switch from Everton.

Lukaku was with United on their pre-season tour of Australia and Asia but did not feature in any of their four matches during the trip due to knocks. He also then missed the subsequent friendlies against Kristiansund and AC Milan.

Ahead of the transfer window closing for Premier League and Championship clubs at 5pm, Tottenham were prominent amid the talk about other potential deals.

Spurs were being linked with Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon, Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso and forward Dybala.

It appeared David Luiz could move from Chelsea to Arsenal, with it understood the defender had trained separately from the Blues’ first team on Wednesday and that the Gunners were pushing to sign him.

Arsenal were also reported to have agreed a fee with Celtic for Scotland full-back Kieran Tierney.

Meanwhile, Everton, who completed the loan signing of Djibril Sidibe from Monaco on Wednesday, were said to be interested in Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi and continued to be linked with Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha.

The first done deal of deadline day involved West Ham as they announced the signing of striker Albian Ajeti from Basel.

The 22-year-old Switzerland international has joined on an initial four-year contract, with an option to extend for a further two seasons.

Ajeti has scored 14 league goals in each of the last two seasons for Basel.

Sheffield Wednesday announced the signing of Australia midfielder Massimo Luongo from QPR for an undisclosed fee, and Bristol City confirmed they had brought in Hungary midfielder Adam Nagy from Bologna.

It was understood Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah, who the Robins had been interested in, was expected to join Leeds on loan for the season.

Meanwhile, the Elland Road club announced they had signed France Under-20 goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a season-long loan from Ligue 2 side Lorient.
