Wolves debrief: Super-sub magic, a 36-year-old masterclass and a promising sign

What a night for Wolves - five notebook thoughts from the dramatic Bristol City comeback.

They’ve done it again. Wolves’ young super-subs keep delivering - and Sean Neave, take a bow.

The impact and manner of the comeback made for another memorable night as Wolves climbed into second place in the Championship.

Not a bad night’s work. Here are some notebook thoughts.

Thoroughly deserved

Let’s not get it twisted - this was a thoroughly deserved Wolves victory.

Bristol City’s efforts could be counted on one hand, including a sublime free-kick to give them the lead. Otherwise, they offered little as Wolves dominated possession and chances.

The visitors lacked a cutting edge, though, failing to turn their early dominance into clear-cut opportunities or properly test the goalkeeper during the opening half-hour.

But credit to Cesar Peixoto. He recognised the need for change, made his moves and reaped the rewards. The options available from the bench proved decisive once again, just as they did at Burnley last time away from home - another comeback win.

Neave makes his mark

Now that is some way to score your first Championship goals. For 80 minutes, it looked as though Wolves would miss the chance to break into the automatic promotion places and pile the pressure on Middlesbrough. Then Neave stepped up.

Peixoto revealed Wolves had studied goalkeeper Bradley Collins’ tendency to spill shots and were prepared to pounce on rebounds. The preparation paid off as Neave reacted quickest to draw Wolves level.

He was in the right place again to grab the winner. Two brilliant contributions from the young forward, who did exactly what strikers are paid to do. What a moment for him to celebrate at the final whistle.

Trippier still has it - but we knew that

Kieran Trippier was involved in both goals, making two crucial contributions when Wolves needed him most. At 36, he has certainly still got it.

He had been delivering dangerous balls all evening. His low cross led to Neave’s equaliser before a cleverly worked free-kick allowed Ladislav Krejci to head on for the winner.

Two moments of real quality from the experienced defender, whose delivery remains a valuable weapon. It was also lovely to see his delight for Neave at the final whistle. The pair know each other well from Newcastle United.

Krejci leads the way

Krejci was outstanding, leading brilliantly from the back while offering plenty going forward.

He was a real presence in the opposition box and a constant threat from set-pieces, making another vital contribution to the winning goal.

Andre, meanwhile, was Mr Consistent once again. He made several important contributions, not least a superb last-ditch tackle inside the box to stop a dangerous Bristol City counter-attack. It could easily have gone unnoticed, but may have proved crucial.

Finding a way to win

Ultimately, Wolves found a way to win. Forget the performance for a moment - that is three victories in a row and five games unbeaten. Momentum is building and they are now just a point behind leaders Middlesbrough.

Teams that earn promotion find ways to win, even when things are not going to plan. Wolves did exactly that on Wednesday night, showing the character to turn a difficult situation into three points.

Confidence is flowing and there are signs this side is getting better. If they can maintain this form, there is plenty more to come.
