Wolves boss Nuno on Romain Saiss deal: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

Nuno Espirito Santo is happy to have Wolves’ utility man Romain Saiss tied down for a couple more years as ‘the idea is to keep what works’.

Saiss has penned a new deal until 2021 while skipper Conor Coady and Matt Doherty signed fresh terms last week.

And Nuno insists keeping those long-serving players is vitally important as Wolves aim to progress.

“Romain brings quality, experience and he’s a competitive player,” said Nuno on Saiss sticking around.

“He is versatile enough to do more than one position on the pitch, so we’re very happy for him.

“They’re players who were here before, so they’re players who have many years in the club.

“And we believe the core of the squad, keeping the same players, will improve us.

“They’re players who have been having good performances since last season, Romain, Conor and Matt. The idea is to keep what works.”

One of the trio, Doherty has earned praise from ex-Wolves chief Mick McCarthy, who signed the Irishman in 2010 and is set to reunite with him after taking charge of Ireland for the second time.

And he believes the 27-year-old is the best right wing-back in the Premier League.

Responding to that, Nuno said: “What I know is that Mick was the one who brought Matt into Wolves, so credit to Mick on choosing a very good player.

“The rest is about Matt and the way he prepares himself, credit to him.

“I think he has become a very good player, but he still has to improve a lot.

“He can drive, up and down, and he has to keep doing it.”

Nuno says ‘everybody is OK’ for tomorrow's trip to Bournemouth, so Diogo Jota will presumably play a part.

The Cherries are set to be without key players Callum Wilson and David Brooks, but Nuno added: “What we know is that Bournemouth have a fantastic squad.

“They’ll find other solutions. They always have a strong XI, for sure.”

Meanwhile, Wolves' Premier League clash against Manchester United at Molineux in April has been pushed forward.

Originally planned for Saturday, April 6, the game will now take place on Tuesday, April 2 (7.45pm) and be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
