Joleon Lescott: Wolves look like Premier League veterans

Wolves already look like they’ve been playing in the Premier League for years, former defender Joleon Lescott believes.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team have made an impressive start to life in the top flight and currently sit eighth in the table.

They’ve only played seven matches so far, but ex-England, Manchester City, Albion and Villa man Lescott, who still keeps a close eye on Molineux matters, is very impressed with what he’s seen.

“Wolves could be the best footballing side to be promoted – time will tell,” Lescott, speaking exclusively to 888sport, said.

“If they have a great season then yeah, you can give them that title, but at the moment I just think it’s too early.

“I don’t know off the top of my head, but I’m sure there are teams who have come up who have had more points at this stage.

“But collectively in regards to the way they have played and not looked fazed at any stage, they look accomplished and don’t look newly-promoted, which is probably the biggest compliment.

“They look like they have been playing in the Premier League for many years.”

Nuno’s side will be looking to build on their start to the campaign, which currently sees them on a five-match unbeaten run.

Lesoott doesn’t believe they’ve been lucky so far, even against Manchester United and Manchester City, but thinks Wolves should be looking to survive this season, first and foremost.

On their top 10 chances he said: “Possibly, but any promoted team should realistically accept staying in the league. If you said to Wolves at the start of the season you can risk it all or you stay in the Premier League and take 17th, you’d take 17th.

“That’s the goal and then you build on that, but obviously the way they have gone who is to say they can’t finish in the top half of the table.

“I am surprised with the performances, I did believe the results would come but again when you are playing in the Premier League it’s not always about performances, you need results to stay in the league.

“But against City and United they have had the fair share of the game, they haven’t been lucky and scraped points, they’ve earned those points.

“That’s probably the most surprising element, but with what they did last season I didn’t necessarily think they would struggle and fight relegation. But it is still early and you never know.

“Obviously they have that style from last season, and Nuno has brought in new faces to fit that style, which is a credit to him as a manager.

“He hasn’t just brought players for the sake of it and thought ‘round pegs in square holes’, the players are brought to fit the system and have to earn the right to play.”
