Barry Douglas: That was our Wolves season in a nutshell

Barry Douglas feels Wolves’ title-clinching victory at Bolton summed up their season.

It was a dominant display from Nuno Espirito Santo’s charges at the Macron Stadium.

Douglas opened the scoring before goals from Benik Afobe, Diogo Jota and Conor Coady completed the rout.

On his strike, the 28-year-old Scotsman said: “The gaffer is always saying ‘gamble, you never know what’s going to come in’.

“I gambled and the ball fell to me, and thankfully I slotted it away.”

Left wing-back Douglas is now on five goals for the campaign, having also come up with 14 assists.

His follow-up from Afobe’s saved shot came just 16 minutes in and Wolves were comfortable for the rest of the afternoon in Lancashire.

“We knew we had to be at the races and control the game, and take our chances – we did that,” said Douglas. “It was a really good performance.

“It’s been an incredible week, sealing promotion and then getting the Championship wrapped up. It was brilliant.”

Douglas is also glad fellow defender Coady got among the goals for the first time this term.

The sweeper stepped up to the spot after Afobe was tripped in the box and made no mistake, sending Ben Alnwick the wrong way.

“That just sums up the team spirit we have, letting him get on the scoresheet,” said Douglas. “I was saying to the boys that I think he was the only who hadn’t scored – from the boys who started (on Saturday).

“I asked Conor ‘if we get a pen, are you going to take it?’ It was nice for him to do it. I think his family was in the crowd as well so it was a nice moment and it sums up our season.

“We want to get everyone involved. It’s not about individuals.

“The game sums up our season. The win was thoroughly deserved, it was a great performance.”

With promotion to the Premier League and the Championship title secured, Wolves go into their final two fixtures without any real pressure.

Sheffield Wednesday and relegated Sunderland are the sides they have left to face, but Douglas is determined for Wolves to pass the 100-point barrier. They are now on 98.

“That’s the plan, that’s the ambition,” he added. “We want to rack up as many points as we can.

“Although we’re promoted and we’re winners, we’re still going.”
