Sam Johnstone

Johnstone’s save to deny Harry Maguire right at the end was, very simply, world class. The 27-year-old also made an impressive stop to keep out Mason Greenwood. An England call-up for Albion’s No.1 cannot be far away.

Top drawer 9

Lee Peltier

He’s waited such a long time for his chance, Peltier must have been devastated to come off at half-time with an ankle knock after what was another steady showing.

Solid 6

Semi Ajayi

An impressive display from the centre-back who read the game expertly at times. It would have been a travesty if referee Craig Pawson didn’t overrule his original decision to award United a penalty following a coming together between Ajayi and Maguire. Not only was it not a foul, VAR also inexplicably missed that the England man was offside.

Alert 7

Kyle Bartley

Another impressive display from Bartley who has improved under Sam Allardyce. Both in the air and on the ground he impressed here in a well-rounded display.

Dominant 8

Conor Townsend

Fresh from signing his new deal, Townsend was a real threat with his crossing from left-back. He also did everything he could to shackle the threat of Marcus Rasford.

Impressive 8

Okay Yokuslu

What a difference it makes having a natural holding midfielder. Yokuslu broke up play brilliantly at times and also impressed with his passing. Man of the match on his full debut, the Turkish international looks to be exactly what Albion needed.

Excellent full-debut 9

Conor Gallagher

The Chelsea loanee put in his best display under Allardyce. Buzzing with tenacity and energy, Gallagher popped up everywhere. He also sent in the cross for Diagne’s goal.

Energetic 8

Ainsely Maitland-Niles

There were a few loose passes but a 4-3-3 system with Yokuslu, Gallagher and Maitland-Niles in midfield looks to have real promise. Like Gallagher, Maitland-Niles gave Albion energy. But he also protected the defence well and made some darting runs forward.

Bright 7

Robert Snodgrass

Going forward, Snodgrass was bright and almost scored from a header. Defensively, the winger was excellent and kept easing the pressure by winning free-kicks.

Smart 7

Mbaye Diagne

The striker bullied both Victor Lindelof and Maguire in what was an thrilling display. Powerful and hungry for goals, the only downside was that he didn’t net a second.

Eye-catching 8

Matheus Pereira

Deployed on the left wing, Pereira worked hard and had some nice touches on the ball.

Disciplined 6

Substitutes

Darnell Furlong (for Peltier, 46) 7, Livermore (for Yokuslu, 67) 5, Matt Phillips (for Snodgrass, 87). Subs not used: Button, O’Shea, Sawyers, Grant, Robinson, Robson-Kanu.
