1963: Born, February 28, in Madrid.
1974: Joins the Real Madrid youth setup as an 11-year-old.
1982: Makes professional debut for Real Madrid C as a striker.
1983: Is promoted to Real Madrid B, for whom he makes 71 appearances and scores 15 goals.
1987: After failing to make the Real Madrid first team, joined Osasuna on loan before moving to Castellon in the second tier.
1989: Joins Real Betis and helps the Andalusian side to promotion in his first season at the club, enabling him to spend his only season in the top flight as a player, scoring 14 times despite his side's relegation.
1993: Joins Granada before moving to Benidorm two years later, Getafe in 1996 and Ecija and Angers for short spells.
1997: Retires from playing at the age of 35.
1999: Gets his first coaching job at amateur club Coslada in Madrid.
2000: Manages Merida for a year before reverting to a coaching role at second-tier side Murcia.
2001: Replaces Valencia-bound Rafa Benitez as manager at Tenerife but his first spell in top-flight management ends in relegation.
2003: Spends time in charge of Getafe before joining Alaves.
2006: Takes charge of Rayo Vallecano and helps the side earn promotion to the second division in his second season in charge, but is sacked in 2010 following a poor sequence of results.
2010: Returns to former club Real Betis as manager and leads them to promotion to the top flight in his first season in charge.
2013: Leads Betis to seventh place in La Liga, securing qualification for the Europa League.
December 2, 2013: Sacked by Betis and is linked contacted two weeks later by Albion following the dismissal of Steve Clarke.
December 27, 2013: Talks with Albion break down in a disagreement over backroom staff.
January 9, 2014: Signs an 18-month contract at The Hawthorns after dropping his demands over staff.
