Lee Grant sets out Walsall plan as he targets long-term success

Grant signed a three-year deal with the club in May.

New Walsall boss Lee Grant has made his ambitions clear, insisting he wants a long and successful spell at the club.

A new era has begun at the Bescot Stadium, with a significant summer of change ahead as Grant looks to build a competitive side for the new season.

Grant has not hidden his excitement at the opportunity and project at Walsall, as he hopes to be the man to guide the Saddlers back to League One. He has also outlined his key focus areas at the club.

“I want to think about being here as long as I can be and having as much success as I can along the way,” said Grant.

“I try as much as I can to focus on the details in and around day-to-day which is going to help us improve.

“The details around the culture, the technical side of the game and what we're doing from a personal aspect.

“How are we helping teams and individuals? And that's staff as well as players, and all of those things are really important to me.

“If we can get a lot of that right then that will give us an opportunity for the bigger picture stuff, which is can we have success on the field?

“What will that do for the players in terms of how they're remembered at the football club, or for me, and Ben [Boycott] and the ownership team.

“They're all the bigger picture stuff which at this moment in time are in the background, but we know these are the things that we're striving for.”

Grant will look to lead Walsall up the standings after a 13th-place finish in League Two last season, which saw them fall short of promotion for a second successive campaign, despite topping the table at Christmas in both seasons.

The Saddlers boss highlighted the importance of the summer period as preparation continues.

Grant continued: “The day-to-day is really crucial. It's crucial we get our recruitment right, it's crucial we get our pre-season right, it's important I've got the right staff around me.

“All of these things will hopefully add up to a positive outcome in the end.”
