Darrell Clarke has warned everyone must be ready to play their part during what promises to be a relentless season.

The Saddlers have entered the final stages of preparations for the campaign with their first competitive fixture now less than a fortnight away.

Boss Clarke has blooded a number of youth team players in pre-season and has not ruled out using them in the months ahead with matches set to come thick and fast.

“It is vitally important this year young lads are going to have a focus around the group with the amount of games we have over a nine-month period,” he said.

“If we are successful in the cups, which we want to be, there will be even more games.

“It is why I have had those boys for the whole of pre-season. We are going to need the squad.

“We won’t have the biggest squad and we have to manage minutes and bodies and we need to make sure one or two of the young boys are ready to take the opportunity, if and when they get it.”

Walsall’s first competitive match since March takes place a week on Saturday when they host Sheffield Wednesday in the first round of the Carabao Cup
