For both McDonald and Clarke, it is their first season with the Saddlers after joining in the summer.

McDonald started the season slowly and found game time hard to come by, before making the left wing position his own and becoming a fan favourite in the second half of the campaign – now, the 22-year-old has praised Clarke for sticking with the winger.

“Darrell for me is a top manager,” he said.

“His passion for the game is right up there.

“He always wants us to win and do better even if we had a good game, he always wants to keep pushing us on to that next level. For me, that’s what I want in a manager.

“I really enjoy working with him, he’s really good with me personally.

“He’s encouraging me, puts his trust in me and always believes in me. I go with what the gaffer tells me.”
