Jack Fitzwater looking to hit the goal trail at Walsall

Walsall's Jack Fitzwater is confident he will soon get amongst the goals after setting himself an ambitious target for the season.

The promising centre-back, who is on loan from Albion, has challenged himself to net eight times in the 2018/19 campaign.

But so far the defender is yet to get off the mark with Fitzwater having been unfortunate to see efforts hit the woodwork while others have been saved.

Alongside that miss-fortune, the 21-year-old missed a sitter in the 1-1 draw at Barnsley. But he feels the goals will come if he keeps getting in the same positions.

"The chance at Barnsley was offside," Fitzwater joked despite being onside.

"I should have three or four goals already. I’ve hit the bar, the keeper has made good saves.

"I missed an absolute sitter at Barnsley, but I’ll hit the back of the net soon.

"It’s just one of those things – at least we’re winning games.

"I’m still aiming for eight, I got three in 15 games last season so they can all come pretty quickly.

"I believe one is just around the corner. I’m getting in the right places they just aren’t falling for me."

While Fitzwater is yet to put the ball in the net, he and Jon Guthrie have formed an impressive partnership at the heart of the defence.

The duo also played together last season in Fitzwater's first loan spell with the Saddlers.

And the 21-year-old said playing with Guthrie has made it easier for him to come straight back into the side.

"With Jon there it was easy to come back in, Fitzwater continued.

"Last season we got on well, we talked on the pitch and off the pitch. We got on well and played well together.

"And I think we have taken that into this season – we are doing okay but we would like a few more clean sheets."

Meanwhile, Dean Keates said midfielder Joe Edwards is "in a good place" as he works his way back to full fitness after injuring his anterior cruciate knee ligament.

"He (Edwards) is doing really well," the boss added.

"He is outside. His running and all the functional work he has to do is being done outside. He is in a good place."
