Walsall Wood hope to match record

Midland Premier outfit Walsall Wood will match their best-ever run in the FA Cup if they win at Cleethorpes Town.

Wood, now led by Gary Birch, have only got to the second qualifying round once in their history – losing 2-1 to Dudley Town at that stage in the 1988/89 season.

They may be the underdogs going into this clash as Cleethorpes are a division above, but Wood have shown a lot of fighting spirit so far.

They won an extra preliminary round replay against Worcester City 3-2 on penalties and beat Whitchurch Alport 2-1 after that.

Chasetown, who needed a replay to beat West Midlands Premier team Wednesfield, are in for tough test as they go up against Gainsborough Trinity at the Scholars Ground.

Trinity are currently leading the way in the Northern Premier after picking up 13 points from their first six games – following relegation from National League North.

Stourport Swifts, who have made it this far thanks to 2-1 wins against Shawbury United and Sporting Khalsa, are at AFC Mansfield.
