Villa, who sit 17th in the table, resume their Premier League survival fight when they host Jose Mourinho’s team.

Smith took advantage of the top flight’s inaugural winter break by giving his players a full week off before they returned to training on Sunday.

The boss said: “I think the players needed it. Doing well in the Carabao Cup means we haven’t had that many days off.

“It has given everyone a little bit of headspace. Sometimes you just need to all get away from each other because you are on top of each other all the time. Now it is back to work and we are looking forward to it.

“In terms of fitness the mini-break has come at a good time and we will be all guns blazing.”

Villa have been handed an extra 571 tickets for their Carabao Cup final with Manchester City on March 1.

It takes the club’s total allocation at Wembley to 33,666.
