Villa winger Albert Adomah facing a fortnight on the sidelines

Villa anticipate Albert Adomah will return to training within a fortnight as the wideman recovers from injury.

The 29-year-old was forced off after suffering injuries to his knee and shin during last week’s 4-0 friendly win at AFC Telford, with internet reports over the weekend claiming he was facing several months on the sidelines.

Yet the reality is far less severe and Adomah has a chance of being fit for Villa’s Championship opener with Hull on August 5.

A £6million deadline day signing from Middlesbrough last summer, Adomah was the club’s most creative player during the 2016/17 captain, notching up 10 assists including several for top scorer Jonathan Kodjia, while also finding the net three times himself.

Boss Steve Bruce’s pre-season preparations to date have been hampered by injuries and the absence of some key players.

Centre-back Nathan Baker is also being assessed after he too was injured against Telford, while midfielder Mile Jedinak has only recently returned to training after undergoing groin surgery during the summer.

Attacker Jack Grealish was given an extended break after being part of England’s under-21 squad at the European Championships, while Bruce has vowed to proceed slowly with Ritchie De Laet following the full-back's return from a long-term knee injury.

Leandro Bacuna is due back in training soon after Curacao’s exit from the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Dutch Caribbean island lost all three group games in their first-ever appearance at the tournament.

Goalkeeper Jed Steer has meanwhile emerged as a transfer target for League One Charlton. Steer, who missed most of last season with an Achilles injury, is wanted by the Addicks on a season-long loan.
