Lyttle family rivalry on the run

A June date at Donington Park is the one occasion former Albion defender Des Lyttle's son Tyler won't want to follow in his father's footsteps.

Nineteen-year-old Tyler, a former Wolves academy player, is the archetypal chip off the old block.

Like his dad, who played 89 times during a three-and-a-half-year spell with the Baggies, Tyler is plying his trade as a rampaging right-back for Bristol Rovers.

Des, now director of football at Thomas Telford School, Shropshire, has played a big part in shaping Tyler's blossoming career.

But all that will goodwill will go out of the window at the Great Donington Run on Sunday, June 26, when father and son go head to head around the world-famous East Midlands race circuit.

They've opted for the 10k challenge, with a 10-mile, 5k and Family Mile also on offer to runners of all ages and abilities during the day.

It could just be mind games, but Des, now 44 and living in Brewood, reckons he'll be following Tyler to the chequered flag.

"I'm giving him 25 years, so he'll definitely beat me," said Des. "My only hope is he's still jetlagged after returning from holiday a few days earlier. That's the only way I will beat him.

"But I'm really looking forward to it."
