Diggers are clearing the ground as the foundations are laid for the new station building.

Much of the scheme has taken place out of view of thousands of commuters, who have been allowed to go about their daily routines unhindered as the work takes place.

Boards are up around the building site and bit by bit the station is taking shape.

The old British Transport Police station has been bulldozed and the former station car park flattened.

The train station will be knocked down and replaced by a state-of-the-art building.

The Midland Metro will link up to the new station, along Pipers Row and Railway Drive.

The first section of the station is expected to become operational to customers in autumn 2019, when phase two of the programme – bringing down the remainder of the current station building and completing the new build – will start.

The completed station is due to open in summer 2020.
