'Time to move on!': Region's MPs give verdict on Boris Johnson's ‘repeated contempts’ of Parliament

Tory MPs have called for an end to the "Westminster sideshow" after Boris Johnson was found to have deliberately misled Parliament over Covid lockdown breaches.

In its report the Privileges Committee said it would have recommended suspending former PM Mr Johnson from the House for 90 days had he not already have resigned.

The committee also accused Mr Johnson of being complicit in a "campaign of abuse and attempted intimidation" against members, and recommended he be banned from the parliamentary estate.

Supporters of Mr Johnson in the Black Country and Staffordshire have today rallied round their man, who himself branded the report "complete tripe" and said he was the victim of a "vendetta".

But the overwhelming demand among Conservative MPs was for their party to move on and focus on tackling key issues such as the cost of living crisis and illegal immigration.

Stourbridge MP Suzanne Webb, a staunch supporter of Mr Johnson, said: "Boris has resigned as an MP, the findings of the Privileges Committee about events from up to three years ago are out but have little relevance going forward.

"Even though I am not convinced this has been entirely an evidence-based process, I do believe it’s time to move on.

"The country has challenges both domestic and international and the Government has plans to deal with them. I think voters are more interested in that than this Westminster sideshow."

Another backer of the former PM, Dudley North MP Marco Longhi, said: "Any fair-minded person, even those who might be against Boris, will not comprehend these sanctions.

“What is also beyond comprehension is how the chair of the committee would be allowed to continue in her role having openly pre-judged Boris before the committee heard any evidence.

“The country, the party and I want to move on from this saga and focus on the challenges we face and deliver better outcomes for all.”
