Gavin Williamson appointed Theresa May's new Defence Secretary

Gavin Williamson has been named as the Government's new Defence Secretary, Downing Street has confirmed.

The South Staffordshire MP replaces Michael Fallon, who resigned last night following allegations of inappropriate sexual behaviour.

Mr Williamson served as Chief Whip since September 2016 when he was appointed to the position by Theresa May.

A statement from Number 10 said: "The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Rt Hon Gavin Williamson as Secretary of State for Defence."
