The BMW Concept Z4 previews stunning new roadster

Two-seat sports car is being built in collaboration with Toyota

BMW has pulled the wraps off the Concept Z4 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California.

The sharply styled concept previews the design of the forthcoming two-seater production model, which has been designed in tandem with the new Toyota Supra. It is believed the BMW will be offered exclusively as a convertible, while the Toyota will be a coupe.

The concept’s premise is to give an indication of what the finished product will look like when it’s revealed at the Geneva motor show in March next year.

Some of the more prominent features, such as the sharp crease low in the doors and the slim-line wing mirrors are unlikely to make production, but the overall shape should be largely unchanged. Expect the short overhangs, large front air intakes and well-defined, angular lines to stay.

BMW says the proportions mean that the driver sits closer to the centre of the car than in any of its previous roadsters, while the dashboard has been designed to wrap around the driver to give “a very sporty sensation”.

Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president of BMW Group design, said: “The BMW Concept Z4 in an all-out driving machine.

“Stripping the car back to the bare essentials allows the driver to experience all the ingredients of motoring pleasure with supreme directness. This is total freedom on four wheels.”

Production of the BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra is expected to begin early next year, with deliveries beginning before the summer.
