The collision, which took place on Bilston Street Island and leading onto the A41 at around 2pm, brought traffic to a near halt.

No one was hurt in the collision, which cleared at around 3.30pm, however, both vehicles were heavily damaged, with engineers having to repair the tram on-site to get it moving again.

Mark Porter, of Dudley, said: "It's caused quite a bit of traffic, you can see it backed up all the way up the road. I heard that it might be a police vehicle but I'm not sure.

"I was supposed to be at a meeting in Walsall but I don't think I'll be getting there if they don't get the traffic moving."

The car, a grey Skoda, was confirmed to be owned by West Midlands Police.

Isabel Walker, 21, said: "Yeah it's a bit weird, I'm not quite sure how they came to hit each other, it's created a bit of traffic though."

"I'm not sure what happened to be honest. I heard a crash and then the traffic stopped moving and that was it."
