Rajinder Kaur Mann OBE will support the Lord Lieutenant, the Queen's representative in the region, with a focus on her home city.

She will promote voluntary, charitable and youth activities as part of her new role.

Ms Mann, vice-chair of governors at Burton and South Derbyshire College, said: "It is a great privilege and honour to be appointed to this role and to serve the West Midlands and, particularly, my home town of Wolverhampton.

"The Sikh faith has an intrinsic value of ‘seva’ (meaning service) and I hope that this role will enable me to serve the region representing the lieutenancy in reaching and connecting with the wider community, raising awareness and promoting good causes."

Her appointment was made formally in the London Gazette.

She added: "On a personal note for me, this is a great achievement for my family and community, and marks the success and recognition of migrant communities who have served in the West Midlands for generations.

"My late father, Bhag Singh Mann, who came to Wolverhampton in 1954 and worked in the steel industry, would have been so proud of this honour.

"My mum, Ajit Kaur Mann and children, Aman and Piran, are delighted that through this role I can do what I love best – continuing to serve and support individuals, organisations and communities across the West Midlands to positive effect.”
